Water Safety Campaign

This lesson idea will develop technical and communication skills, using knowledge and understanding of the dangers of rivers, applying this knowledge in a real life context. Learners will research various issues of water danger with the task of creating a podcast/posters/leaflets for a campaign promoting 'water safety' on rivers with particular focus on the Clyde waterfront for younger children.

Broad Outcomes of learning
• Subject knowledge of 'water safety' gained and enhanced through research on potential hazards and lifesaving techniques
• Employability skills enhanced - application of knowledge in a real situation through production of podcast /posters/leaflets aimed at encouraging responsible behaviour near rivers and water amongst their peers
• Employability skills developed such as researching and sourcing information, contributing and working in teams, reporting and presenting findings to group
• Confidence of working independently from teacher-led lessons demonstrated through independent research of water safety topic
• Learners take responsibility for their learning through; making decisions on their roles and responsibilities within groups; the content and scripting of their water safety pod-cast /posters/leaflets; planning the campaign
• Functional Writing skills enhanced through focus on language and structures appropriate to genre - script writing; leaflet writing; poster layout and content - persuasive writing
• Understanding of the purpose of the campaign and various methods of communicating information - podcast /posters/leaflets and presenting their knowledge and understanding through pupil planned and organised 'water safety' campaign awareness raising events
• Learners have developed enterprising skills identified as 4 capacities of CfE
