A £10m restaurant quarter at the Broomielaw in Glasgow’s financial district has been granted planning permission, with building work expected to kick off next year.
The redevelopment of the Clyde riverfront took a leap forward
this week with city planners giving their unanimous consent for
pavilions at the Broomielaw housing bars, restaurants and
cafes.
Permission for the 32,000sq ft Broomielaw development was granted
at a meeting of the planning application committee at Glasgow City
Council yesterday.
The plans are expected to create up to 150 new jobs and complement
the longer-term development aspirations in the area, including the
creation of the Fastlink bus service between the city
centre, the SECC and the new Riverside Transport Museum at
Glasgow Harbour.
Capella Developments, which is behind the project, is looking to
build four two-storey pavilion structures with restaurant and pub
units and shopping. Seating areas at ground and first floor levels
would also be created.
Jim Fitzsimons, chief executive of Capella Group, said the
granting of planning permission signalled the development was
firmly on track. He said: "This is great news and a real
endorsement by Glasgow City Council of our proposals for this
site.
"A thriving waterfront leisure destination is something Glasgow has
long been sorely lacking and we believe these plans will go a long
way towards addressing this.
"This development also offers real economic opportunities and will
bring both jobs and investment to the heart of Glasgow.
"It will be a real asset to the IFSD and will help ensure the
continuing success of the Broomielaw and contribute to the
regeneration of the Clyde waterfront.
"We are already talking to signature restaurants and cafes and look
forward to creating a dynamic business and leisure location for the
city."
Broomielaw Quay has been designed by architects GD Lodge. Fiona
Hamilton at Jones Lang LaSalle has been appointed to market the
development to potential occupiers and David Davidson at Cushman
& Wakefield is arranging the funding package for the
development. Conran Design has been appointed to provide the
branding for the scheme.
Work is expected to start next year, with a completion date of
2013.
