Paul Smith

Trainee accountant, Russell & Russell, business advisors

The most satisfying thing about my job is .... hearing feedback from satisfied clients.

The hottest topic in our sector right now is .... Cloud-based accounting.

Financial services is a great career choice because .... it provides a wide and varied choice of job roles. I spent 15 years in Japan, building up and running a successful English language school. I had worked in fund administration with JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank before travelling to Yokohama where I founded my business which eventually grew to 40 pupils a day. I now have a Japanese wife and two children.

The biggest challenge I have faced in my career to date is …. transitioning to the role of accountant - requiring lots of determination and self-study. I started studying for my ACCA qualification while I was in Japan and applied to Russell & Russell, who invited me to interview. It is a friendly, approachable firm with a supportive and encouraging working environment and I am now working towards my finals.

The three best things about working in Glasgow are .... people and their banter, food and drink, and it's multicultural.

My favourite part of Glasgow is .... the West End - for its architecture and eating out.

Outside of work, I am passionate about .... travel and music

My first ever job was …. working in Paris in a hotel and the most valuable lesson I learned doing it was being able to adapt to a variety of situations and cultures.

Favourite band - Don't really have one - but Led Zeppelin would be up there.

Favourite holiday destination - South East Asia.

And, finally, what three words best sum you up? Active, adventurous, adaptable.
