Description:
Part of the new South Glasgow Hospital
campus, the new laboratory accommodates blood sciences,
pathology, genetics, microbiology, postmortem and mortuary
services. The laboratory will be linked to the new adult and
children's hospitals via an underground tunnel.
The new facility has over 700 staff including medical, clinical
scientists, biomedical scientists, technical assistants,
administrative and clerical staff.
The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to deliver
diagnostic services for biochemistry, haematology, microbiology,
genetics and pathology.
It also has one of largest laboratory managed contracts with
Abbott Diagnostics, which is worth more than £100 million over
seven years, to provide a range of diagnostic services.
A total of 189 new jobs have been created with the new lab
alone, which will serve a population of over a million. Almost 60%
of these jobs have gone to new entrants with 25% of staff in the
16-24 age bracket.
