Design a New Bus Route

This idea will develop knowledge and understanding of the uses of the mathematical principles of Speed, Distance and Time, Social Arithmetic and prisms to develop a bus route which is cheap, efficient and safe to use. This project will encourage the application of this knowledge in a real life context. Young people will work in teams (as bus route developers) with the task of designing a new bus route in the city centre.

Broad Outcomes of learning
• Subject knowledge enhanced e.g. the use of the speed, distance and time formulae and is capable of using them proficiently. The ability to observe the relationship between finance and distance of route etc
• Enterprising skills improved by developing confidence, self awareness, positive attitude; increasing motivation to learning; taking responsibility and making decisions; consideration of others through group work and discussion
• Developed employability skills: Communication, planning, organisation, researching, co-operating, contributing, sourcing, negotiating, analysing, reporting
• Pupils take responsibility for their learning through making decisions about Location of bus route, determining cost of establishing route (bus shelter size & design, number of shelters etc)
• Learners have developed 4 capacities of CfE
Relevance to curriculum
• Supports CfE Mathematics
• Relevance of how curriculum topic on SDT, finance and prisms is relevant to work and life and how this subject knowledge is put into practice in a real situation
