This problem solving lesson focuses on a yacht's safe departure from the pontoon. Students are involved in learning about applied physics in a practical situation on board a yacht, with the project encompassing problem solving, logistical planning, communication and safety awareness.

Exploring the boat manoeuvring will lead to an understanding of forces, pivot points, fulcrums, levers and turning circles, planning, cause and effect.
This project idea is offered in association with Glasgow Community and Safety Services.  Practical lessons onboard its sail training yacht, Clyde Challenger, grab the interest of young people and make learning relative to the working world.  The ex-round the world racing yacht gives pupils the chance to engage directly with the natural world.
